Lollapalooza is an annual music festival, which was first created in 1991 by Perry Farrell, the singer of the highly influential band Jane’s Addiction, and was actually a touring festival. Lollapalooza ran annually until 1997 and returned again in 2003. Only in 2005 did the festival get its current weekend format and its destination in Grand Park, Chicago. Lollapalooza was so successful that a contract with the city, firstly signed for five years, has been prolonged until 2018. It means that Chicago now is a top destination for alternative rock, hip-hop and punk rock fans, although dance and comedy performances take place as well.

Such a weird name for the festival came from the American idiomatic phrase meaning an extraordinary thing or event. The word sometime ago also referred to a lollipop which is why the festival’s original logo also included a big red lollipop.

Over the years, a diverse range of bands had played at Lollapalooza: Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Pearl Jam, the Smashing Pumpkins, Cypress Hill, Metallica, the Prodigy, Queens of the Stone Edge, Kings of Leon, OK Go, the Killers, Snow Patrol, Muse, Radiohead, Depeche Mode and many more.

2010 was not only a GREAT year for Lollapalooza but also a GREEN year. It is August, it is Chicago and one of the best rock’ n’ roll bands is performing for 70,000 people, and this band is Green Day. They have done everything that a respectable rock band should do: sing, scream, swear and fire off whatever is around. Billie Joe Armstrong, the frontman of Green Day, danced, collapsed, rose again and at one time even played a solo with a guitar behind his head! Amazing it was, he didn’t seem to be a slightest bit fatigued.

The Green Day show was astonishing, they were a killing rock’ n’ roll machine that night.  Billie Joe Armstrong during the performance said "They said they're gonna pull the plug on us at 10 ... I told them to kiss my f--king ass, we'll play for as long as we want".

The energy of the band was inexhaustible. "You paid your hard-earned money to buy a ticket to tonight," he yelled later in the set. "It is my honour and my privilege to give you the best f---ing show you've ever seen in your life."

The day before Green Day’s incredible performance another guest was greatly expected and that guest was Lady Gaga! She exceeded all expectations, her show was absolutely fabulous and the decorations and her excessive make up were outstanding. Her performance was something between an arena concert and a Broadway show; the costumes were changed at least 10 times.

She is a Madonna for a new generation, her energetic robotic dance movements, her stamina throughout the concert and finally her extravagancy made her a star. “You can be whoever it is that you want to be,” she shouted to the audience, “all the freaks are outside and we’ve locked the door. Follow the glitter way.” Introduction of her Monster Ball tour even involved a broken car, which rolled onto the stage. The crowd didn’t have a minute to stop enjoying provocations and shocking evens happening on the stage, and ninety minutes of the show seemed to fly by.
